This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach fourth grade in the Bronx and this upcoming year I am going to have the same children all over again! I will be looping with my class to the fifth grade and again, I will try to get my students to buy into my philosophy of "Never Settle for Less Than Your Best", and for them to work as hard as they can during the year. I always expect my students to be role models for the other fourth grade classes, but this upcoming year they will need to inspire the whole school.

I set a goal to read around 10 class sets of books outside of the school curriculum, and this year we will need new books.

In 4th grade they read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Frindle, Because of Winn-Dixie, Charlotte's Web, Eagle Song, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Watsons Go To Birmingham 1963, Hatchet, Crossover, Number the Stars, and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

In order for my students to work as hard as I hope they can, I need to make sure that the classroom is well stocked for the upcoming year! We need a bunch of new books!

My Project

I have my students read almost compulsively. Every day I send my students home at the end of the day with the book that we are reading as a class. Next year, as I will be going with them to fifth grade, I need not only new books but books that will challenge them. I have fourth graders reading books most children don't read until they reach middle school, which means I want to push them even further next year!

With this donation, our class will have our first seven book sets for next year!

I have already gathered two new sets of books and will be working on getting the other three to round off the year!

These books span a wide range of topics, from segregation to the great depression and from love stories to magical worlds.

I again want my students to become excellent and avid readers and by exposing them to literature classics, I hope to accomplish that goal. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences. They will be able to really curl up with a good book and enjoy the literature!
