My students are dreamers, problem solvers, and likely the most creative little people you will ever meet.
They are a happy group of first graders who love school and love to learn.
One hundred percent of our school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch; yet, they don't let hardships stand in their way. My students' economic situations are just as varied as are their family dynamics. We have military families with a local National Guard unit in our area and an Air Force base close by. We aim to take good care of our military families. Our district includes an Indian Reservation and we have a high population of Hispanic students, many of whom have family members who work in the agricultural industry.
My Project
We have a buddy class. They are fifth graders, and we like to get together throughout the year and do different activities. I would like to present the newest Diary of a Wimpy Kid book to them. The children can wrap them up and give them to our buddies. My first graders will also practice reading the Piggie and Elephant book, "My Friend is Sad." Then when we get together with our buddies, each of my students can read it to their buddy. The fifth graders will help my students take an Accelerated Reading test on the book, and children can have a discussion about friendship together. These books will be taken home and added to the children's home library. I think this will be an activity the children will remember for a long time. It will also help them create a new friendship and give them ideas on how to make lots of new friends.
