My Students

We connect to the literature we read and students form their own opinions about life. Robin Williams (Dead Poets Society) defined the purpose of our class when he said, "I always thought the idea of education was to learn to think for yourself."

Our high school is in a rural community.

Many of my students live on family farms. I try to help my students experience places all over the world through the literature we read. Many of my students won't have the opportunity to live in large cities or in other countries. Literature gives them that exposure.

My Project

My senior English class focuses on British Literature. I want them to read a novel by Charles Dickens. A Christmas Carol is a short, accessible book for seniors. If we receive these books quickly, I will have them read it in December. Regardless of beliefs, it's important that students understand the history and stories that make up their culture today. Today's American culture in December is based off of stories from the past like A Christmas Carol.

A Christmas Carol isn't just about Christmas, it is a great story about learning to love and care for those around us, especially those that are less fortunate than we are.

The themes in A Christmas Carol are universal regardless of religious and ethnic background. Being kind, giving, and generous are themes everyone should learn.
