This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things exciting and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, kind-hearted, and very eager to learn.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
So often, we as educators have to play the role of a parent to some of our students. I have students who are in dire need of the basic necessities that single-parent for these upcoming winter months. As I reflect on the basic needs of my students, I realize that items such as socks, sweaters, sneakers, boots, long johns, and snacks are not available for them. Some of my students are very large in stature and always gets teased about their shoes, so I wanted to make sure they have some boots and sneakers that fit them and have durability.
Having basic clothing and food items is a need that several of my students lack and it is affecting their self-esteem, taking away from academic progress.
Unfortunately, in this community, most students are left to take care of themselves. It is my goal to take the burden off the child and seek resources for them!
