The students in my class represent the average of students at our Middle School. The school is an inner-city school with 68% low income. Our school services students in grade 6-8 who come to us from a variety of neighborhood elementary schools. Students at our school are teamed for 6-8 and have looping teams in grade 7 and 8.
I teach science-intro to cooking to students in grade seven and eight.
This program introduces basic skills of cooking to students while focusing on health, measurement, temperature, safety, and fun! The majority of my students have never had the experience of cooking in their past, but some are required to make meals for siblings on a daily basis. My students take pride in what they make and love sharing their creations with teachers and staff in our school!
The program goal is to create well rounded students and introduce them to the options of our high school career tech program.
By creating many different food items the students will gain knowledge of tools to use and necessary protocol to follow in the kitchen.
My Project
In our cooking classroom, we currently have three cooking stations. With an average of 15 students per class, we have five person cooking groups. It is very difficult to work in a group of five in the area that each station has.
A new stove will allow my classes to have an additional cooking group, lowering the number of people in each group!
With the extra station, they will be in groups of 3-4 rather than 4-5. This would definitely be an asset for the students allowing them more hands on time and an easier opportunity to stay involved.
During the class, students learn how to make a breakfast, lunch, dinner, appetizers, and desserts. They cook at least 3 of every 5 days, so this stove would get happily used.
