"Do a little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world."~ Desmond Tutu. It's the little acts of kindness that we can teach our students about that will make a difference in our world.
These third grade students are kind, generous, curious and ready for hands on activities.
Our school is in a small rural community. We are surrounded by beautiful apple orchards and plenty of farm land. We are a Title I school filled with young hungry minds for learning. Anything hands on brings excitement into the lessons. We are an active bunch that like to move, create, sing and help others. We have unfortunately had many sad happenings in our community throughout the years. This year we have been faced with death of loved ones and pediatric cancer of one of our very young students. We are very close knit and when tragedy hits the support of the entire community is amazing. Families, staff and students join together to support where we all can.
My Project
With these materials (canvas boards, paints, brushes, sponges) our third grade students will be creating canvas paintings of butterfly gardens to sell to help raise money for pediatric cancer in honor of one of their classmates. The books will introduce discussion to the lesson. With this "Financial Literacy" lesson about planning and money management through charitable giving, students will learn about charitable organizations and how monetary donations from individuals benefit both the charitable organization and the people it serves. They will discuss other organizations as well, and their services, but we will be working to help an organization that will benefit a student in the school for this year. With the paintings the students will display them for sale and all money raised will be given to the Paige's Butterfly Run. This organization is dedicated to raising money to fund pediatric cancer research and patient programs at a children's hospital in our area.
This project will increase students' proficiency in financial literacy.
The students will learn about helping others in need and no matter how big or small your contribution is they will be helping to make the world a better place. It will better prepare their generation to make sound financial decisions and be productive citizens.
