Aloha from na keiki o Hawai'i. My class provides early intervention services to qualifying special needs children with a range of disabling conditions, ages 3 to 5 years. My school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island ancestry.
Our class cheer summarizes our motto: "You too, We too, We all love PreSchool!!"
My Project
Every year I typically have three to five students who are in diapers/pull-ups, and it is quite a process to handle all the changes during the day.
However, it took a week with a substitute educational assistant who put in words something I should have realized years ago--"Mrs. T., you need a changing table."
We, credit really belongs to my aide, work with dedication to toilet train the kids, or at least get them to more actively participate in the process, i.e. helping with dressing. However due to the disabilities of some children, the need for changing them continues even as they grow older. Consequently this changing table with its step-up is critical as we work with these bigger kids. We also need extra paper for the table, wipes and gloves so that we can more practically and safely handle the most basic of needs of my students.
