This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My middle school is in a culturally-diverse, high-poverty area in Durham, NC. We are a Title I school and 100% of our students receive free lunch and breakfast.
Many of our students do not have access to the supplies and safe environment that students do elsewhere.
We are working to ensure that the media center is a place for students to know that they are safe and welcome. Our mission is to act as a community gathering space for students and staff to support their multiple literacy goals.
My Project
My students are so excited to participate in the North Carolina School Library and Media Association's annual Battle of the Books competition! This is a yearly district-wide reading competition. The kids read books from a set list and compete in February in a trivia-bowl style competition to see which school has the very best readers!
Historically, my school has struggled to be competitive, mainly due to a lack of resources- it's time for us to change that and show what these kids can do!
Our students are incredibly bright and talented. They deserve access to the resources that will allow them to show that to the world! We need these books from the Battle of the Books list so that our students have a chance to be competitive in this year's competition. Please help me give them to tools they need to be successful!
