I have been teaching elementary art for four years, and one of the best parts of my job is running Art Club. This weekly activity gives fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students the opportunity to build their skills and work on projects that are more advanced, ambitious, and open-ended than those we are able to tackle in the constraints of a standard school day. Art Club is extremely important to the students who participate, and it makes me endlessly happy to see them grow, expanding their knowledge and skills throughout the year. As our school year nears its end, however, something has been looming on my mind. I teach in a low-income school where the vast majority of children have free or reduced lunch, and many lack even the basic materials for classes such as pencils and notebooks. I know for a fact that many of them have no supplies at home and will have no way of doing art over the summer.
I want to ensure that my students have the materials to continue pursuing their passion and honing their skills all summer long.
After much thought, I have put together the most concise but comprehensive possible package to pass out to my artists at the end of the year. With your help, I will be able to give each child a sketchbook, markers, pencils, erasers, colored pencils, a pencil sharpener, watercolor paints, watercolor paper, and a case to safely store all of their supplies.
I know art means the world to my kids. They stay after school every week to do more. Art is an important source of expression and escapism for these children. Please help me provide them with the opportunity to continue being awesome, ambitious artists, even when Art Club is out of session.
