A Carpet for the Classroom

Help me give my students a large classroom rug with moveable dots so that they don't have to sit on the hard tile floor when gathering for circle games, movement and playing instruments together.

My Project

My little scholars love music class! They do a lot of work with steady beat and rhythms that get more complicated for each developmental level. Growing as a student musician requires a large variety of skills, and making music requires doing more than one thing at the same time. The children engage in a wide variety of musical activities to build those skills in a fun and effective way.

Many musical activities, like playing xylophones, movement, dance, and circle games all take place in our gathering space: "on the carpet," except, my students sit and move on the hard tile floor because...we don't have a carpet!

Right now, they are learning the Ghanain stone-passing game, "Obwisana." While singing the song, my little musicians pass an egg shaker around the circle on the beat. Pre-K learns to pass to the next person while keeping the beat. In kindergarten, there can be 2, 3 or more shakers being passed at once. By 1st and 2nd grades, every student has a shaker, passing to the next person, on the beat.

This takes a lot of focus, cooperation, melodic and rhythmic accuracy and a complete internalization of the beat. If everyone is passing their shaker to the next person in perfect rhythm, it creates the image and sound of an enormous wheel. The kiddos love it! They are so proud of themselves when they see and hear the entire class performing the composition in unison, everything moving and sounding at once...they recognize that they have become one voice, making music.

It would be such a blessing to us to play the xylophones, sing, dance and learn circle games together--on a large, comfortable classroom carpet!
