This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Kindergarten year is full of wonderful experiences and memories. The first day of school, the first field trip, the first best friend, the first award, the first lost tooth and so on. I would love to capture these wonderful memories for my students with a camera.
My students approach life with the enthusiasm and curiosity that all five-year-old children seem to have in abundance.
Despite living in a low, socio-economic area where their parents struggle to make ends meet, they are incredibly hopeful and looking forward to the future. My students' parents want the best education possible for them but due to financial constraints, many cannot afford to have books, puzzles and other educational toys at home. It is up to me and the school to provide these wonderful, amazing, eager and bright kids with a wide variety of learning tools. We are a Title 1 school, which means that we do get funds to improve the academic achievement of the disadvantage, but not enough to provide every classroom with all the "extras" that they need. In fact due to all the budget cuts, we are running very low on essential supplies such as pencils, crayons, scissors, erasers, and even multipurpose paper. Anything extra must come from teachers' pockets.
My Project
Having a classroom camera would allow me to take pictures of my students participating in different school activities such as field trips and performances, play time, learning time and even their kinder culmination/graduation. These pictures would then be printed and used to create a memory book for the students to take home that documents their year in kindergarten. With the camera, I would also be able take pictures of my students to use for special projects such as a Mother's or Father's Day gift. My students would also be able to use the camera themselves for some lessons. In math for example, when studying about geometric shapes, students could walk around the school taking pictures of the different shapes that they see at school. We could then print these pictures and make a classroom book about shapes.
Having a camera in our classroom will enhance the learning experience of my students.
Not only will they learn how to use a camera at a young age, but they will be able to use the camera to complete and enhance their assignments. In addition, my students will be able to make a memory book of pictures to have as a keepsake of their year in kindergarten.
