Help me give my students a calming getaway where they can soothe their worries and grow their minds. Comfy couches, a relaxing cup of herbal tea or cocoa, soothing greenery and fidgets can keep their anxiety at bay.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are incredible people. Most of them come from minority backgrounds and low-income, single-parent homes. They are especially talented in the arts. Some travel over an hour to get to school in the morning.
What makes my students so unique is their kindness and support for each other.
They cheer for each other's successes and offer advice and a ear to listen when things are tough. They take care to address their peers by their preferred names and pronouns, and make the best out of whatever life throws at them.
My Project
My students returned to the classroom as very different people than they were before March, 2020. Many of them are still living with the trauma of isolation and the loss of loved ones, and they carry those emotions with them every minute of the school day. More than ever before, my students are prone to anxiety and panic attacks which interfere with their ability, not just to learn, but to function through their day. Many of my students eat lunch in my classroom because the noisy and crowded cafeteria is too overwhelming for them.
Comfy couches, rather than sterile traditional desks, greenery around the room, a nook to make themselves a relaxing cup of herbal tea and fidgets can combat the difficult emotions students deal with everyday.
Many of my students still face difficulties related to the pandemic such as unemployed parents, ongoing health issues their loved ones experience after a Covid infection, and recovering from grieving a loved one. My students learn better when they are feeling well, both physically and mentally. By transforming my classroom into a serene and calming space, my students can find a retreat from the chaotic and unpredictable outside world.
