This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our students move, dance, sing, create, play, improvise, listen, and analyze during Music Class! And these are only a few of the things we do. In our Music Room, we learn to make space for brave moments of beauty, including beautiful mistakes and all that comes with learning and growing into better humans. Sometimes, we need a moment to regroup or refocus our minds and bodies on the musical tasks at hand. And sometimes, the xylophone activity may have overstimulated us to the point of dizziness as we learn the proper technique to play these instruments.

Enter the Peace Center: A place to retreat to in times of overstimulation, big feelings, or dysregulation, where a rug with simple facial expressions, a comfy bean bag, and a pair of noise-cancelling headphones can distract us and allow us a few moments of calm before re-joining the music-making occurring around us.

We have goals of music performance and musical excellence, but we also understand the science and research that tells us that learning can only occur when a child feels safe and calm and has everything they need. We must meet the social and emotional needs of our students before asking them to create magic in the Music Room.
