This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
We are at a Special education school in the Bronx. Each day my scholars experience stress throughout the day. Many of my students go home to video games and aren’t able to experience nature. Living in a constant state of stress and not having an outlet has significantly impacted their learning. This is why having a school garden is extremely important for my scholars.
The creation of a school garden will offer a wealth of benefits, including promoting environmental stewardship, fostering community engagement, and enhancing our students' understanding of nutrition and the natural world.
Our students will get the unique opportunity to directly interact with nature and the environment they inhabit. They will be encouraged to tackle problems and devise strategies that have a positive impact on their community and contribute towards climate protection.
This project will instill respect for the environment in our students and enhance their health through the cultivation of vegetables and plants. The responsibility of maintaining the garden and outdoor space will lie with our students, fostering a sense of ownership and duty.
The proposed garden will not only serve as a vital community space for promoting student well-being but also provide an educational platform to delve into subjects such as agriculture, food accessibility, nutrition, science, climate, sustainability, art, and various other curricular objectives.
