Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many of my students come to speech and language therapy with more than communication challenges. They may also experience sensory needs, frustration, or difficulty regulating their emotions when tasks feel challenging.

When students feel overwhelmed, it can be difficult for them to focus, participate, and practice the communication skills they are working so hard to build.

This project will create a calming corner in my speech/language therapy room filled with sensory and regulation tools designed to help students reset and refocus. Items such as sensory fidgets, calming visual tools, and flexible seating options will give students a structured space where they can briefly regulate their bodies and emotions before returning to learning.

For many students, having access to calming supports can make a huge difference in their ability to engage in therapy activities. Instead of becoming frustrated or shutting down, they will have appropriate tools that help them manage their feelings and return ready to communicate, practice new skills, and interact with others.

This calming corner will support students across many grade levels and will be used throughout the school year for years to come. By providing a safe, supportive space for regulation, this project will help students feel more confident, more successful, and more ready to use their voices.
