This is a special education classroom geared towards students with learning disabilities and emotional disabilities who have a variety of many different needs. There are about 30 students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes that are seen by me on a daily basis. All students are on IEP's and require specialized instruction.
All my students struggle in some way or another that many people do not see or understand, but keep chugging along and try to do their best.
I love how they try to better themselves as students and people. They have big dreams for themselves and do not let their disabilities hold them back from wanting to be something amazing in life. These students are sweet and loving kids who I see progress daily.
My Project
This project will help create a calm learning environment that promotes improved learning performance, ease classroom management and enable students and teachers to be more focused and effective. In my classroom, I have students who have behavioral and academic needs. The bright lighting in the classroom makes it hard on our students to focus and causes distractions in the classroom. The lighting also makes it hard for us teachers to focus because we are having to attend to behaviors more so than we would like.
The ShadeMAGIC Fluorescent Light Covers will make it a lot less bright in the classroom and easier for my students to focus on instruction.
Also, the lighting in the classroom influences moods in the classroom. The students who have behavioral needs would benefit from a classroom with dimmed lighting. The colors of the blue will be soothing and help with anxiety, emotional disabilities and allow them to focus more on their academic needs. It also will help make the classroom a calming environment for the students as well.
Recently, our school took away TV screens that were used as a clock in the classroom. We do not have a clock in the classroom, which makes it hard to keep track of time as to when to switch classes, switch rotations and it creates more anxiety on the students because they are more concerned about missing their next class or being late to it.
