Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every day, I have the opportunity to go into a classroom of bright, curious, loving first graders. They learn alongside each other, encourage each other, and help each other grow. They try hard things to stretch their brains, and they ALWAYS try their best. My students also face some challenges. Most of my students are in the process of learning English (~75%) and many (40% of the school) are on free or reduced-price lunch. Some face the instability of homelessness. They also know they deserve the best education they can get!
The future of the country is in my classroom today!
They are diverse, not just in race, language, and culture, but in talents, interests, learning styles, academic and emotional needs, and personalities. They need the tools that will allow their diverse needs at school.
My Project
This year, I have a group of students with many social, emotional, and behavioral needs. I have heard it said that "you cannot address Bloom's without first addressing Maslow's", referring to how one cannot approach academic learning until students' basic needs are met. These basic needs include a feeling of safety, love and belonging, and self-esteem. Many of my students come from situations that require them to learn to be extremely resilient and they are in the midst of learning the important coping mechanisms that will help them be successful and ready to access academic material.
I firmly believe that it is my job as their teacher to help them learn these coping skills while providing them a safe and calm classroom environment.
The games and books from this project will provide us with discussion points and opportunities for social imagination. They touch upon important subjects such as anger management, mindfulness, diversity, working together, hearing and accepting situations we don't like, and empathy. The light filters will give our room a more calming feel than the harsh florescent lights. The Morning Meeting book will help me lead more effective and powerful morning meetings to create a stronger community in which students can talk about their emotions and lives with greater ease. The card stock and lamination will help me make resources, such as individual visual reminders of calm down techniques/ways to express emotions or printing out additional social resources I have already purchased from Teachers Pay Teachers, for individual students and the class.
These social-emotional and behavioral tools will help me meet the needs of my students and build a classroom in which everybody has the support and tools to cope with whatever situations occur inside and outside of the classroom.
