Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students thrive in a classroom that feels calm, safe, and welcoming — not just physically, but emotionally too. They are in grades K–2, on the autism spectrum, and have unique sensory and communication needs.

This project will help them learn about compassion by creating an environment where they can better understand the needs of others and practice daily acts of care and empathy.

The schedule chart and storage pocket chart will help students anticipate transitions. When one child sees another struggling and shows them where to go or what’s next, they are seeing the world through their classmate’s eyes and responding with support. These tools also build student independence, which helps them notice and assist others who need help navigating the day.

Magnetic letters and pointers will be used in whole-group lessons. Students will be encouraged to offer these tools to peers, take turns leading, and support others who feel shy or unsure — a hands-on way to learn that helping others succeed lifts the entire group.

Disinfecting wipes and bandages they’ll be used as part of our emotional care routine. When a student offers a wipe or bandage to a friend who is hurt or overwhelmed, they are learning to take action to alleviate someone else's suffering — even in small ways. These moments often help them understand what it means to be cared for, and how to care for others in return.

I will measure their understanding of compassion through observed behaviors, such as helping peers clean up, offering tools without being prompted, showing patience during transitions, and responding kindly to classmates who are upset. When students act without being asked — helping quietly, sharing generously, or comforting a peer — it shows that they are internalizing compassion as part of who they are.
