This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every day I have the privilege to teach and facilitate the learning for 42 assigned to me for literacy block. Based on statistics and data we are considered a high poverty school because everyone receives free breakfast/lunch. However, my students are driven and motivated to succeed by their parents, extended family members, the faculty, and staff of my dedicated school.
Eager, enthusiastic, and energetic are words I use to describe my new fifth grade literacy class.
They are inquisitive and enjoy reading novels, comic books, and chapter books. My students are racially and economically diverse.
My Project
I selected series of books that my students adore. Reading a series deepens students connections to characters, increase comprehension, and reading time. For my ELL students, the predictable language and style of the author increases students success. It also helps their understanding of the text.
I Survived and Captain Underpants collections are on opposite ends of the literary spectrum, but they represent the variety of readers I have in my class.
My historical fiction lovers devour I Survived series and research the historical moment in each book. My future comedians are engrossed and sometimes grossed with the adventures of Captain Underpants.
All of the series will enhance my classroom library by adding to the magic of literacy.
