This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Bullying in schools is a growing epidemic. Children need to be taught how to deal with bullies, and how to respond to challenges without becoming a bully. I want to help create a "Bully-Free Zone" in my classroom and our school.

My school is a Title 1 school.

My students are in the Fifth Grade. Most come from low income households and are English Language Learners. My students have experienced or witnessed bullying on the playground, in the lunch area, and in the restrooms. Statewide budget cuts have caused us to have a shortage of supervision on the playground, and some students take advantage of this to bully others. My students need to be taught what to do when confronted with a bully, and how not to be a bully even when faced with challenging or frustrating circumstances.

My Project

My students love reading, and learn from what they read. Providing a variety of literature that teaches strategies for dealing with bullies and promotes an anti-bullying message will encourage my students and make them feel empowered in creating a "Bully-Free Zone" in our classroom and in our school. These bully books will positively impact my students' outlook on how to deal with difficult situations. Teaching them how to have positive relationships with their classmates will serve them throughout their education, and provide life-long lessons. My students will use the iPod Touch to record and listen to the stories, as well as to access related songs and resources.

These materials are important to my fifth-graders because they will learn social skills that encourage positive peer relationships.

It is important for them to learn about bullying and how to deal with bullies before they go on to Middle School. Knowing how to respond to bullying will give my students a sense of security, help build their self-esteem, and also help prevent them from becoming a bully.
