A Bug's Life?! Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis in AP Lit
Help me give my students their own copies of "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka.
This unabridged version will help students succeed on the AP Literature exam.
I teach at a Title I neighborhood high school. Our population is diverse, and most students continue their education in traditional four-year colleges and universities. My students are already working hard in my AP Literature and Composition class, and I want to make their educational experience in the class as beneficial as possible!
This year, my students are reading various novels, poetry, and short stories to prepare for May's AP Literature and Composition exam.
"The Metamorphosis" is a classic piece of literature that will allow us to connect to other literature this year through themes, characters, and complexity. This novel is frequently referenced on the AP Literature exam as part of selected passages for response, as well as for suggested novels to reference when answering one of the essays. Most recently, "The Metamorphosis" was referenced on the 2024 AP Literature and Composition exam. Incorporating this book into the curriculum will further support my students as they work hard this year to learn the skills and concepts that will help them succeed on the exam and in college.
My students are using color-coded annotation, in order to have separate highlighting colors for structure, narration, character, setting, figurative language, and literary argumentation. With full funding of this project, students will be able to use their own copy of the book to annotate while reading. This will further support their skills in preparation not only for the exam, but also for their continued education after high school.
