My Biology and Environmental Science classes need access to a copy of the "Discovery Channel Planet Earth" videos and a beautifully illustrated book "Planet Earth: As You've Never Seen It Before".
We are from a small rural district in North Texas. It is not a surprise that teenagers seem to view the world based on their own surroundings. And while there are many benefits to living in a smaller community, it can limit one’s perspective on our impact on the world as a whole.
These incredible videos will help to broaden our students’ vision of the current issues that are facing our community, our state, our country and our planet. By widening the scope of their focus I hope to give them wings to dream: how they can affect the future not just of our community but of the world at large.
For some students helping them to dream can mean the difference in whether or not they take the next step and after high school and pursue college and a career or decide to stay here in our community and work.
My biology classes consist mostly of freshman, who are in the early stages of planning their high school course selections: few of them have begun making plans for after graduation. But my Environmental Science students are seniors, some of whom have given little thought to their future after high school. They need to be planning and thinking long term.
For both of these diverse groups these videos and the book can provide an incredible new way to spark their imagination and get them to thinking…"what if?" Please help me inspire my students to dream. I have some very talented students who can have a major impact on our world; they just need to believe that a different future is possible for them.
