My Students

Our school has a 100% Free Breakfast and Lunch Eligible population in Oakland Chinatown. Our school is the center of the diverse community of urban Oakland, educating close to 800 children from prekindergarten through grade 5.

Many children are in the school environment twelve hours per day, since parents work multiple minimum wage jobs to make ends meet.

It is a hardship for families to provide donations of needed items, and teachers oftentimes pay out of pocket for materials.

Expectations are very high at our school, and California Dept. of Education has awarded our school for high achievement as a Title One Elementary School.

My Project

Throughout the week, my students and I began coughing and feeling ill from the smoke. Recent California's wildfires forced my students to stay inside the classroom each day. Concentrating on regular school assignments became difficult for all, as the air quality in the classroom worsened. Oakland Schools had to be closed.

The urban air quality in Oakland Chinatown is oftentimes less than healthy.

The BreatheSmart Air Purifier will clear 1100 square feet of classroom air. It will eliminate the residue of smoke, as well as daily urban pollution. With cleaner air, my classroom will provide an optimal environment conducive to learning.
