My students come from a high-poverty school district. My biggest challenge is persuading students who are reluctant readers to explore the world of reading. They are discovering and exploring the world of literature as we begin our new school year. Unfortunately, it's difficult to get some students to buy into the world of reading, especially when there are so many other things fighting for their attention. I need the best new books out there so they will have the best chance of becoming self-driven readers.
My Project
Sixth grade is all about students discovering that they are great readers and that reading can really be fun! In order to captivate my students and draw them into the world of literature, it is so important that I have the newest and most exciting children's literature. Sometimes students need a bridge to try that first big novel. The unabridged illustrated versions of the Harry Potter series and the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan will target that problem specifically!
It can be so frustrating for students to get excited about a book and not have access to it.
Many times libraries have extraordinarily long hold lists for the newest and most popular titles. By creating a desirable classroom library that attracts and excites my students, I can show them how exciting and amazing the world of reading can be!
