Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a kindergarten through fifth grade, a charter school in Colorado with one of the largest enrollments at this level within our district. Our statistics reflect an 87% receiving free and reduced-price lunch and an ELL population of approximately 62%.
We are more than just a school, we work as a family unit.
Our students may face obstacles in their lives, but when they come to us they know they are safe, cared for, and that we will help them succeed. Even though obstacles, they are respectful, eager to learn, and strive to do their best.
My Project
During our school events, we have handed out books to our children, but the books are either outdated, used, or $1 dollar books. The families and children are appreciative, but these children should not have to always receive leftovers or books that are not popular.
Children need to know and be shown, they are worth more than the leftover or unpopular books.
Having a Bookworm Vending Machine, the children will know when they reach their full potential academically or behaviorally they will receive more than a pat on the back or a paper expressing their excellence, they will be able to purchase a new popular book of their choice. Students are very observant and understand, if one student receives a reward for reaching a goal then they too, could receive a reward for their success.
The excitement and the smiles on children’s faces are indescribable when they receive advertisement flyers for Book Fairs. The books they want to purchase are the only thing they can talk about. It is painful to see their upset faces when they come to school the next day because their families do not have money and are not able to purchase books from the Book Fair. The Bookworm would be filled with books the children want and would work towards earning. Children would not be limited to receiving one book; as long as they earn tokens they would be able to purchase books. Our experience with other rewards shows the children would not only purchase books for themselves, but they would also shop for books for their siblings. We hear, “Oh I am going to get this for my brother”. The books purchased through the Bookworm could have the possibility of reaching multiple people.
