Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a small, community-based Title I school in East Oakland. Students are primarily from low-income, immigrant families, and are highly motivated to achieve. The majority of our students are English language learners from immigrant households. Their families are from Guatemala, Yemen, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Cambodia, the Philippines, Tonga and the U.S.

COVID-19 has them learning from home in a zip code with the highest rate of infection in the county, and with new stress and responsibilities as they help hold together households with family members who have lost employment or been directly affected by COVID-19.

Our students are hungry to learn and deserving of everything that we can creatively muster to provide for them. We are working hard to create projects that foster their love of learning and empower them to use their creativity to expand their world.

My Project

I am requesting copies of “This Book is Anti-Racist” for our 6th grade advisory this year. Advisory is a small group session where we step back from coursework and engage students in social and emotional learning and thinking about current events. During distance learning, it has become one of our best attended and most important classes, as students are dealing with all the same social currents as the adults in their lives, all while dealing with a very different school experience. This year, we need to work even harder to surmount the technological barriers in order to engage students in conversations that are meaningful to them. “This Book is Anti-Racist” is a colorful and engaging “guidebook” that contains exercises to help students reflect on their own identities, think about the way power is distributed in society, and learn how to stand up to injustices. It’s written so that young people will feel empowered to stand up to both peers and adults, giving them a language to understand and address racism, and the drive to do it.

In the time we live in, having a conversation about racism with our students is difficult, scary, and necessary.

We hope this book will bring teachers, students, and families together in the fight against racism.
