This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My Family Divided is a book that speaks to my students' unique experiences in this country. Many have families divided, brothers, sisters and mothers left behind. This is a book that will resonate with my students. Rarely do they see books about themselves. My goal is to infuse my students with a love for reading with a story about themselves.
My Family Divided is a book that will inspire my students to tell their own stories.
This book will validate their struggles in a new country, and speak to the hope and dreams that they and their families carry with them when they cross the border. My students are special. They navigate between two worlds, the one they left and the one they came to. Often they are multilingual. They are the ones who help their parents, translating for them, doing the job of an adult. This book will show them that they are not alone. Others have experienced what they experience. It will inspire them to continue to strive and give them hope for the future.
