Mrs. Stephens from Ferguson MO is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
See what Mrs. Stephens is requestingMy students need books that captivate them, that they can relate and will keep them up reading at night like "The Hate U Give" or "Long Way Down".
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
First, my students are wonderful young people. They are kind, caring, and generous with helping others - most of the time! They are middle schoolers on their own literacy journeys. Some of my students enjoy reading, but are below grade level. Others would do anything rather than read, but they just haven't found the right book . . . yet!
I would like my students to see reading, and books, as gifts.
I want them to value reading and see themselves as book owners. To do that, they need books at home, books that are their own, that they can have next to their beds, on top of their dressers, or in their hands as they read themselves to sleep.
Because many of my students do not see themselves as readers, I'd like to be able to create the opportunity for them to become book owners.
The books funded from this project will be put in a specially decorated box, and on their birthdays, my students will be able to open the box and choose a book.
Many favorites are on the list, like Jason Reynolds' books, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and The Babysitters' Club graphic novels.
For a number of my students, this book will be the very first book they've received as a gift. Students will be able to treasure these books as their very own, and, I hope, begin to see themselves as readers and book owners, and view books as gifts that help them better understand our world.
