Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I school where a majority of the students come from low-income families. Many of my students do not have books at home and lack a basic foundation in reading. I have found two amazing novels that have captured my students attention and they beg for me to read more each day!
My students often do not enjoy reading because they do not have a variety of options.
Many of our books are outdated with the exception of the small library I have purchased. I am excited to share books they can relate to and open their mind to the idea that reading is fun!
My Project
In order to become better readers students must find books they love! It only takes one book to help our students fall in love with reading! By receiving a classroom set of these novels my students will be able to follow along during read-aloud time, work together in small groups, practice weekly vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. A classroom set of books allows for more activities!! More importantly, "Because of Mr. Terupt" discusses issues that 5th graders can relate to that draws them into the book.
A great foundation in reading is essential to a successful student.
Many of my students have the desire to learn, but lack of materials and funding keep my students from reaching their full potential.
