"You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child." ~ Dr. Seuss. If we all had parents like Dr. Seuss, no child would ever have that NEED to hear a story read to them.
I currently have 18 students in my classroom.
I can have anywhere from 18 to 25 students in my classroom during a school year. Most of my students come from stable homes with attentive parents. However, some students do not receive the love and support needed to succeed in reading and math. Our school loves to support the children and make them feel safe and loved while at school. One way children can feel safe at school, is to be wrapped up in a great book.
My Project
My students complete two stations during our Reading Workshop block. Students either silently read, use the computer, are in reading groups, or are on the listening station. Right now we have CD players but over time the CD players are not working and the headphones are beginning to not be as reliable. It is important for my students to hear stories read to them to increase fluency, expression, and vocabulary. Some students are not lucky enough to have parents at home who have access to books and parents that can/will read to them nightly. Some families just have busy schedules. By having CD players and headphones, I know that every child will be able to hear a story read to them at least twice a week.
I have already seen a huge improvement in my students' reading levels.
Students are becoming more fluent and have a deeper understanding of those books. By donating to this project, it guarantees that every child has a chance to hear a story and be wrapped up in its treasures.
