My Project

The AMAZING scholars at our charter school are resilient and strong with a desire to learn and grow. The materials and resources afforded them in Baltimore City are so disparate and simple materials like books that you expect in every classroom are not abundantly available at our Charter School. I am on a mission to secure equity in resources for all students particularly students with disabilities in 6th-12th grade with this project. In my classroom, when a student shows interest in one or more of my books, I will let them read it and keep it. My high schoolers with disabilities want to pass their new love of reading on and select books they love to donate to our middle schoolers. Our project includes books my students have chosen and mindfulness and calming coloring books to support social emotional resilience in our scholars inside the classroom.

With this school community service project, my high school students with disabilities want to donate new books they have recently fallen in love with to our younger middle school students with disabilities to improve literacy throughout the school community.

Students will meet with a select group of middle schoolers to discuss the books and give them to the students.

By providing texts to our middle schoolers with more familiar characters and similar life experiences faced daily in the lives of our students living in an urban area, doors open to new experiences and empowerment to reach higher. Novels that are representative of people in their community and family make texts less intimidating and more accessible for students who don't even have a well-stocked library at their school. Your donation can provide what should be a basic provision in all schools nationwide but is so devastatingly disparate in the inner city: new BOOKS.
