A Book in Every Hand: Blood on the River-Jamestown

Help me give my students each a copy of the Blood on the River: Jamestown to read along in class.

My Project

My students are curious, resilient learners who thrive when given the tools to succeed. Many come from diverse backgrounds and face challenges outside of school, but inside our classroom, we build a community around shared learning and stories that matter.

They love history, hands-on projects, and stories they can relate to and historical fiction brings it all together.

Giving them access to their own book is a game changer for engagement and growth.

I’m requesting a class set of “Blood on the River” by Elisa Carbone so each student can follow along with their own copy. This novel fits directly into our history and reading curriculum, and it opens powerful conversations about perseverance, growth, and identity during the founding of Jamestown.

Having a personal copy allows students to annotate as they read; develop stronger comprehension skills; deep up even when absent; take deeper text-to-self and text-to-world connections.

I’m requesting 50 paperback copies of Blood on the River, one for each student. These will be purchased through Scholastic at discounted rates. This project will create a more equitable and engaging classroom experience. It supports literacy development, builds student confidence, and creates a shared reading experience where everyone belongs.

Thank you for supporting our classroom and for believing that all students deserve access to great books and great learning.
