Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are largely low income and immigrant. Our school is a Title I school, which speaks to the degree of my student's poverty, where over 90% of my students have free or reduced-price lunch.

As a teacher in a high poverty, largely Latino, public urban school, I have the added challenge of developing and fostering a high learning environment in my classes with students who may have been conditioned to believe they can't achieve because of our community's poverty.

My Project

Help me give my students books with Chicanx main characters and are written by LatinX authors. Books they rarely encounter in their English courses.

We are requesting books written by Latinx authors as a means for my students to learn more about their culture and history. Many of my students are eager to read but struggle when they cannot find a book they connect with.

Many school issued books are written by authors they rarely can connect to. With high interest books, however, my students are thrilled to borrow books. At the beginning of the year, many students seemed semi-interested in my small library (which I started with a Donors Choose project last year). As I've increased my library to 12 books, I have witnessed students become increasingly dedicated to borrowing books, and reading them independently. Many of my students have asked for other novels and books. Sadly, I've been unable to expand our library rapidly.

It is widely accepted that classroom libraries play a key role in providing access to books and promoting literacy. Classroom libraries accomplish many worth investing skills. They motivate students by encouraging recreational reading; they provide access to a wide range of reading materials that reflect abilities and skills; and they provide choice in self-selecting materials for self-engagement. It is our hope you invest in student's literacy by making this library expansion a reality.
