My Students
I teach at a small alternative school in New Orleans. My students are predominately African American and are working on getting the last few credits or have sought the school out for an alternative setting. New Orleans is an urban space, and we have been struggling for a long time to do right by all our students. I will help my students here learn to love to read, even though they don't know it, yet. We can practice for tests, but in the long run, I want them to be lifelong readers (and writers).
My Project
While we certainly have texts we are using for anchors, my students would benefit from a classroom library of variety. I would like to be able to have more free choice/book clubs. Thus, I have selected two copies of each book for our wish list.
Right now, my back shelves are a barren book wasteland.
People engage more with books they choose themselves (on the whole). Think about the books people made you read in school (Ethan Frome?). What stories have you carried with you? What books do you return to again and again? I want my students to have this.
