Next year, I am adding 11th-grade English to my class schedule! But not every book in our curriculum guide is in our building. As I prepare for next school year, I need class sets of two specific titles: The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and Dear Martin are the books that I still need to round out my units. One (Frederick Douglass) teaches students about the history that shapes our country. We will use this book to study literature from America's founding, the Civil War, and famous speeches that shaped our nation. The other (Dear Martin) exposes my students to young adult literature from people who look like them and share their experiences.
Our school district cannot financially provide class sets for my students, but research shows that when students have a book in their hands, they are more likely to read and retain what they're reading.
As districts everywhere struggle with having enough resources, students should never suffer because of economic distress. Will you help me fund my classroom with these books for our units next year?
More than half of students from low‑income households
