My Project
My young scholars love to have books read to them! And I so enjoy sharing my book collection with them. Recently, the mother of one of my students asked if I had any books in Spanish that she could borrow to read to her child at home. I lent her a few from the small number that I have. But I want to be able to offer her and other parents a larger number of books, and provide them with high quality literature, as well as offer relevant books that will be conversation starters for their families.
I would like to start a book bag program that includes books in which my students' cultures are represented, and which includes books in Spanish for parents who only speak this language.
You will see that I am requesting books that include African American characters, as well as several books that are in both English and Spanish. I hope to combine these books with some others that I already have, and put together 22 bags (22 students is my class limit) of four books each: two in English, one bilingual, and one in Spanish. I will number them and have the students take home a bag each week, for them to enjoy with their families, including through their weekends.
I trust that the children will see even more clearly the value of literacy as their parents serve as their role models. Hopefully, this will encourage them to want to become fully literate themselves. I also hope that the positive messages contained in many of the books will help students to feel proud of who they are and to believe that anything is possible in their lives.
