Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a Title I school in a lower economic area of Southern California. My students struggle with leaving their home problems at the door when they come to school each day, but they are very eager to learn.
At home they do not have access to many of the tools that are required to succeed in today's economy, so our school and teachers work very hard to provide a safe and engaging environment for our kids, to help bridge this gap.
My Project
After 21 years teaching Kindergarten, I was switched to 2nd grade, lacking appropriate reading materials.
My classroom is filled with 2nd grade students who enjoy opening a book and exploring.
My students are very inquisitive and are ready to read. They love to look through books and begin to read chapter books. Unfortunately, many of my students come from low economic homes and don't have books to read at home. They rely on a classroom library. My classroom becomes the only place to find a book of interest. Unfortunately, I do not have enough chapter books in my classroom library to meet my students' needs. I need books that will help continue to build my English and English learner students to become 21st century learners and help STEM programs in my class.
Some of the books I’m asking for are Word Fun box sets. These are grammar books to help them learn language arts skills and state standards. My students also enjoy finding a favorite spot in the classroom and diving into a story. The ground is not the most comfortable spot. That is where flexible seating, being able to use different furniture to sit and complete activities, will come handy. My students can use the chairs and stools to sit anywhere in the class, be comfortable, and be swept away in a book.
With mass budget cuts, our school is unable to allocate extra funds for teachers changing grade levels. This is where you can help. Thank you in advance for your support.
