Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are up against incredible odds. I teach the THE lowest preforming school in one of the biggest school districts in the country. The students I teach live in tough neighborhoods and face challenges like poverty, homelessness, and hunger on a daily basis.

In spite of these odds, my students come to school eager to learn everyday.

When they are at school, they are challenged and provided with resources that let them explore their limits. While my students, for the most part, do not have books at home, they burst into our classroom library excited to look at the bright pictures and stories that take them to faraway places.

My Project

I want to make sure these wonderful kids can take this enthusiasm for reading home and share it with their families. Last year, I was able to give my students books to take home through a similar Donorschoose grant and it was a HUGE success! Students were reading at home to their parents and their parents were reading to them- and not unrelated- every student left kindergarten reading at grade level! This year, I am requesting books by classic children's book authors like Eric Carle, Mo Willems, Todd Parr, and Doreen Cronin. Each book will support the topics we are covering in our class that month.

With your support my students will not only start to create their own picture book library at home (something every child deserves) but also will start to bridge the divided between the work that is done in school and their home life.

Reading at home is something that every child should be able to do!
