My Project
I teach middle school language arts at a school focusing on Indigenous knowledge and growing good human beings. Reading builds critical thinking skills, and I extend this by having classroom discussions about what students read. Preteens and teenagers spend a lot of time on screens, and I am bringing back the magic of books by having them read daily.
I chose books that show the resiliency of Indigenous people and how, over time, the world has changed, resulting in everyone needing to be resilient.
Students who didn't like to read before they entered my classroom have developed a love for reading, and those who already love to read devour the books we read together. This encourages struggling readers to build their confidence because they're practicing daily.
Your donation not only serves the 2024-2025 school year but every year until I retire or the books fall apart and will serve hundreds of students for years to come. I have requested clear contact paper to cover the books to help extend their lives.
