Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 47 third grade students at a high poverty, inner city elementary school in Richmond, VA. Of those students, several have disabilities that impact their performance in school, both academically and behaviorally. At home, many of my students do not have access to any books or the ability to drive to the local library. Many times, the books my students read in my classroom are the only books they read all day. My students range as readers from reading at the kindergarten level to a fifth grade reading level.
My Project
My students need a wide variety of high-interest books to facilitate AND encourage their love for reading. This project encompasses a range of leveled texts, both fiction and nonfiction, to capture the students' attention.
These books will be used for a variety of purposes: 1.) Whole group read alouds: I will model what fluent readers sound like and what strategies good readers use when they're reading to themselves.
2.) Small group reading: Within the class, students are placed in needs-based groups where they practice reading texts on their reading level, whether that is K or 5th. 3.) Individual reading texts: During our school's RAM ("Readers Achieve More") time, our students silently read a book of their CHOICE. This may be on the level, easier, or harder. It's their CHOICE. Allowing students to choose what they read is a powerful motivator for students learning to read. When children are interested and invested in what they are reading, their overall comprehension increases.
