My students need a wide variety of high-interest books to facilitate AND encourage their love for reading. This project encompasses a range of leveled texts, both fiction and nonfiction, to capture the students' attention.
These books will be used for a variety of purposes: 1.) Whole group read alouds: I will model what fluent readers sound like and what strategies good readers use when they're reading to themselves. 2.) Small group reading: Within the class, students are placed in needs-based groups where they practice reading texts on their reading level, whether that is K or 5th. 3.) Individual reading texts: During our school's RAM ("Readers Achieve More") time, our students silently read a book of their CHOICE. This may be on the level, easier, or harder. It's their CHOICE. Allowing students to choose what they read is a powerful motivator for students learning to read. When children are interested and invested in what they are reading, their overall comprehension increases.
