A Bloody Investigation

Help me give my students the opportunity to discover their own blood type and how a blood type test is performed as well as lab results interpreted.

My Students

My Junior CSI students come from the local community and rural farms. Approximately 68% of the kids are on free and reduced-price programs. My students are a blend of different cultures and family backgrounds with about 65% of my 483 students being girls. My 6th graders are participating in a 9 week sampler CSI curriculum. My 7th and 8th graders are spending an entire semester learning crime scene investigation. Over the past 2 years, the MD program has grown to offer an advanced level semester course for 7th graders who successful completed the 6th grade course and NEW this year, I am offering a unique Crime Solvers Detective class for students who want to take a 3rd year of Medical Detectives. All of my students selected this elective course and want to take the program. My PLTW program was just nationally recognized as a Distinguished PLTW school, too. We are servicing 60% of our school population with STEM learning.

My Project

In middle school it's "all about me". This is one of many reasons students love Getty's Medical Detectives class. Junior MD students spend over half the course investigating their bodies from vital signs and growing DNA to fingerprints, shoe treads, and their own blood.

This project is a real-world hands-on lab activity where students test their own blood to learn their blood type.

Very few middle schools know their blood type. What even more positive, it the students are doing the science lab work themselves just like a lab tech in a hospital would do. After preforming the blood type test, the MD students learn how to interpret the results and report out their blood types. Together the 6 classes will organize the test result data to create graphs and charts. We will then be able to compare our "classroom population" with the statistics of blood types in the "world population". Without realizing it, my Junior MD students are "doing" science and math work as "fun".
