My Students

My students are always excited to come to art class and leave asking for more. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, engagement, creativity, and empathy make them special. I love their unique ways to express themselves or respond to prompts in class, and I love how much they connect to the world and each other through art.

COVID-19 has made learning difficult this year, and art is a very special time for students to slow down and explore difficult times and emotions in a safe, stable, reassuring atmosphere that invites exploration, wonder, and peace.

With many absences due to COVID cases and the current distance learning, that valuable learning moment in art has been disturbed. I hope that I can give students a special, memorable experience to reconnect this year, despite the disturbances due to COVID and remind them that they and their ideas and voices always matter.

My Project

Every young student dreams of painting on canvas, like a famous artist would. It is a special, memorable experience for children, different than painting on paper.

Having the opportunity to paint on an individual canvas and create a special painting in which a student can take pride helps me show my students that I believe in their artistic abilities and I value what they want to communicate to the world, continuing their social-emotional and academic learning in light of COVID-19.

Although we are experiencing uncertainty and instability, I want my students to know that their voices, their dreams, their ideas, and their emotions always matter. It will be a special moment for students to connect to self and others, both in the classroom and at home as they bring their creations out of school and into their community.
