My Students

There's no such thing as a typical day in my classroom. Students are constantly working on robotics, 3D printing, experiment proposals for NASA rockets, circuits, soldering, and many other activities. In the engineering club, students build 3D models for school improvement projects, design CO2 cars, build balsa wood airplanes and launch water rockets.

The students in my classroom and in my club are a diverse group of sixth, seventh and eighth graders.

The programming classes have more boys than girls, but it is a popular choice among the girls too. This class is also racially and ethnically diverse.

I also offer an engineering and robotics club after school. The club gives opportunities for students who aren't in my class to get some experience. For students in one of my classes, club is an opportunity to explore topics we just can't get to in class.

My Project

Our classroom is currently limited to computers and a raspberry pi. We would like to explore a platform that gives us more than just images on a screen.

The littleBits platform will let us see a physical result to our programming, and also give us our first experience with Arduino.

Being able to program in different languages and platforms is a useful skill, especially with the rise of the Internet of Things. Our experience on a PC can only take us so far - being able to program actually devices and combine different functions for different purposes is a new way to think about programming.
