This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I'm a second grade Special Education teacher in New York. My school is a Title I school, and approximately 84% of its students receive free lunch.
Every day, my students borrow books from the classroom library to read independently. As often as possible, I sit with each student during independent reading to listen to them read aloud to help build their fluency and confidence as readers. With 25 students in my classroom, I am not able to sit with each student during a period of independent reading.
I'd like to enhance the independent reading period by having a wider variety of books on CD available. By using the small assortment of iPods available, my students select a book from the listening center and listen to the narration of the text as they read the story. As students listen and follow along with each recording, they will build literacy skills and confidence!
We currently have 16 books on CD in our listening center. I'd like to add an additional copy of each of these books to the listening library so more than one student can follow along with the text at a time. I'd also like to expand our listening center with the addition of 14 single story read-along sets and two multiple book read-along sets. Each set comes with four copies of each book and a CD recording of the text. These new books will nearly triple the size of our listening center and provide my students with a wide variety of interesting and engaging literature.
As a Special Education teacher, I strive to incorporate literature and reading activities into my classroom as often as possible. An assortment of books on CD and additional copies of our preexisting books would be a wonderful way to make this goal possible for my students, particularly those who are struggling with reading.
By helping to place CD read-along kits and books into the hands of my students, their reading fluency will increase and a lifelong love of reading will be fostered.
