This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a school on the southwest side of Chicago. Our school has a large population of Latino students whose first language is Spanish. In the years I have worked as a teacher, the students I have had come in every day with a lot of energy, with many questions and ready to learn.
Fourth grade is a very exciting year for students.
Throughout the fourth grade, students learn to become independent learners. Furthermore, throughout the fourth grade, students become exposed to many different text genres and develop many reading and writing skills.
One of the very exciting things about being in fourth grade is that students become independent readers. By the end of fourth grade, students leave having been exposed to many different genres of books. They also leave the fourth-grade loving books and having learned new reading and writing strategies.
My Project
I am hoping to set up a stellar listening center where students can sit and listen to the many different books we have available. This year I am implementing the Lucy Calkins units of study for reading. This requires that students read for forty-five minutes. One way to keep students engaged is to offer different choices for reading one of them being a listening center.
I have a variety of books for the listening center but I do not have a place to store them.
I would love to have the storage bench and store the books with their CD's on the bins for easy access. When the students are listening then they could sit in the bench. I know this will then create a room of dedicated readers in the classroom, not only will they listen to me read during an interactive read aloud. But they will also have a choice to listen to a fluent reader in the listening center. Another item in the shopping cart are magnetic display shelves, they will be used to display the interactive read alouds, students can grab the books after the teacher has read the book and reread if they wish. Thank you so much for your support, without a website like Donors Choose and donors like you my room would be bare.
