A Background in French Before the Trip of a Lifetime

My students need a foundation-Rosetta Stone French Totale- in at least one other language to begin their preparation for our European adventure; French will be their first option.

My Students

Many of us take for granted the mere possibility of being able to one day -- even if it's years down the road -- go on a trip overseas. For many of my students, however, this idea merely looms as an unattainable fantasy. I want to deliver them the opportunity to experience the world around them.

My students are my Advisory -- the now 14 high school junior boys that I have been charged with guiding from freshmen to graduating seniors.

We are an urban public charter school drawing from all corners of the city. Our students are primarily Latino and have sought us out for our commitment to academic rigor and college readiness. My boys represent our school's diversity: 4 with IEPs, several on the free/reduced lunch program, many from single-parent homes, and the vast majority who would be the first in their family to attend, much less graduate from, a 4-year college or university. In my 3rd year of knowing them, I couldn't be prouder of the young men these boys are growing up to be: they are earnest, compassionate, hysterical, docile, protective, driven, and noble.

My Project

In looking ahead to the summer of 2012, I am out to fulfill a promise I made to them on the very first night we met at Freshman Orientation: when they graduate, we will take an unforgettable trip together to Europe. Neither they nor I have forgotten what is now a nearer and more realistic proposal, and in recent months we have been busy hatching detailed plans to make it come true. Because I believe in travelers, not tourists, I want to give my boys a foundation in at least two other languages besides English and Spanish (which most of them already speak). I am optimistic that a program like Rosetta Stone can help all of them develop at least conversational fluency in French. This is the first of what I hope will be several more submissions to DonorsChoose.

I cannot imagine a more worthwhile opportunity for my boys.

Three weeks in Europe will teach them volumes about the world and its fascinating diversity. Furthermore, it will give them much needed experience in the global community -- all the more urgent for students who, by and large, can count on one hand the number of times they have left the city and/or state.
