Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have limited reading ability and retention of letters and their sounds. This year, I would like to assist them in reading independently and I have limited resources. I would like to use concrete objects and a listening center to motivate them and stimulate a love for reading.
I currently work in a Title 1 school in Brooklyn, New York.
My students are struggling to read and meet the new Common Core Standards. Many of them have very special needs and are still expected to meet these academic benchmarks. In working with many of them this past school year, I came to realize that they were not even able to identify the letters of the alphabet, let alone read. Due to many of their disabilities, the children require constant repetition and redirection to stay on task in the classroom. Many of them require the use of manipulatives to spark their interest and keep their attention. They are not able to follow multi-step verbal directives. Directions need to be broken down into single steps and repeated in order for them to be followed. Some of the students have articulation deficits and are not able to produce certain sounds.
My Project
These resources will greatly benefit my classroom. As stated earlier, they will benefit the children by providing a fun way for them to learn to read. The materials will provide additional support to reinforce skills that they are lacking. The concrete objects will provide reinforcement and understanding of each letter sound and show objects that begin with each. The games will provide a fun way to practice phonemic awareness skills.
I feel that a listening center is most beneficial in that it will enable the students to wear the headphones and have any extraneous background noise filtered out. All that will be heard are the prompts from the CD and that will reinforce auditory processing and memory skills as well. These materials will provide a variety of activities to achieve the goals on their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). These materials will be most instrumental in achieving academic success. They are educational and fun.
These materials will greatly improve my classroom.
As a speech therapist, my role is to provide support to those students who are struggling and require additional support. These materials will provide academic support in a creative manner. My students are eager to learn and I hope to use these materials to improve their phonemic awareness and listening skills. Improving these skills will open the door to reading and increase self confidence so that their academic goals can be achieved.
