My students are elementary English as a Second Language students in a rural, public school in North Carolina. We are an A+ Arts school, so most of our lesson have a visual arts, dance, or music component. Most of my students speak Spanish at home, and all of them are eager to learn. They love to wiggle and move, and we rarely have a day when they're expected to sit still through an entire lesson. They love group work and collaborating with classmates to create something special. Usually, you'll find them spread out on the floor working or huddled around a group of chairs.
Like all children, my students love to work together with partners and friends, and they are very creative when given the chance to make something!
Writing assignments are so much more engaging when students have an arts component to support their understanding. We almost always have an art component integrated with the content of what we're learning. I've noticed an improvement in their writing scores, and they use high-level vocabulary more readily when they can work in small groups.
My Project
Our school is transitioning into the A+ Arts program this year. My students love creating stop motion videos, visual arts representations of what we're reading about, and puppets to retell stories. We use lots of construction paper, crayons, and colored pencils, but they would also love to use markers and high-quality arts paper with paint.
Students learn using multiple intelligences, and integrating the arts allows students to flex their creativity and apply content in new ways.
By creating short movies and puppet shows, students gain confidence about their speaking ability. In ESL class, we can create visual art pieces to go along with our writing samples, or students can write about what they create. Paper, markers, and glue can become anything! My English learners can shine even if they haven't fully grasped English because the arts are universal. Anyone can create something beautiful!
