Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a difficult part of our town, and with that comes many challenges in and of itself, but because of their optimism, perseverance, and innocence you would never know it. Each morning they come in with huge smiles and some are even jumping up and down with excitement for what they will be learning that day. It's very contagious :).
My students are my family here at Armstrong.
We work hard and we play hard. I am proud of each and every little accomplishment. Most of Pre-Kindergarten is spent learning how to be in a classroom, learning the sounds and letter names, counting, writing, and how to be a friend to other people who may be different. This is a year of tremendous growth and there is so much fun to be had because of it!
My Project
One of my favorite educational quotes comes from Plato, "Do not keep children to their studies by compulsion but by play." Children, as well as adults, learn more when they are interested in the content. I believe that ALL content can be fun to learn if the time is taken to identify what motivates children. My students are motivated and fascinated by technology. At just 5 years old they are able to creatively use iPads to write, read, form patterns, add, subtract, divide, and even multiply. They are eager to learn more and Osmo is the program that offers them the software to do just that.
Math concepts like money, addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, and fractions are all reinforced by Osmo!
These are math concepts that will be building blocks towards higher education. Osmo can also build and deepen critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are needed not only in the classroom but everyday life. A donation for this gift would help foster student's interest in mathematics and emerging technologies.
